Peonies, originally native to Asia, Europe, and Western North America, have a rich history of significance. In early Chinese history, the peony held the esteemed status of the national flower, though the title has since been officially bestowed upon the plum blossom. The ancient Tang Dynasty in China played a vital role in cultivating and breeding peonies within the imperial courts around the 7th century BCE.

Over time, their allure transcended borders, captivating Japan in the early 11th century, and later captivating France and England during the 18th century. The peony's charm knew no bounds, making its way to the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s, where it gained increasing popularity. In fact, the peony earned the honorable title of being Indiana's state flower in 1957, replacing the zinnia for this prestigious position.
