About the Artist

Gina “SooHoo” Watkins is an artist who has loved living on the Central Coast for over 20 years. She has been painting all her life, and studied art at Cuesta College and California State University, Northridge. She is a widowed mother of two children.

As an adult diagnosed with Inattentive ADHD, Gina is dedicated to empowering women to recognize the signs, seek accurate diagnosis, and prioritize their mental well-being. Having personally struggled with chronic depression, anxiety, and PTSD, and witnessing the impact of serious mental illness on family and friends, she is passionate about educating people and breaking down the stigma surrounding both neurodivergence and mental illness. Gina's experiences have fueled her mission to provide support, resources, and education to women who are navigating similar challenges with ADHD and to people affected by mental illness.

What's with the name "Soo Hoo"?

Soo Hoo, her unusual two-character Chinese maiden surname, is a part of her identity as a half-Asian half-Caucasian woman. She feels it complements her colorful artistic expression.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My art serves as a therapeutic outlet, allowing me to express and process complex emotions. When faced with traumatic experiences, painting has been instrumental in navigating feelings of grief, depression, sadness, and anger. However, my artistic journey is not solely about darkness. I strive towards happiness and find solace in conveying gratitude, strength, love, growth, healing, and a return to joy. By sharing my art, I hope to contribute to the community that has played a significant role in my recovery. I believe that art can be a powerful tool for healing and inspiration, offering hope and comfort to those who may be going through similar challenges.
